"...In all the time I was walking I only saw one other person." "You saw someone else?" said Sir Walter. "Oh, yes! At least I think it was a person. I saw a shadow moving along a white road that crossed the dark moor. You must understand that I was upon the bridge at the time and... Continue Reading →
Some autobiographical musings on Strange LRP – guest post by Jamie Hall, 5/5
Event 3 built on previous Strange LRP events, and on everything else that I have played, crewed, or run. I'm pleased with what we've achieved – crew and players together - and I am indebted to everyone for giving their time, money and/or patience, over the last three years. A chance to write for a... Somewhere to stash a set of larp rules…
I've been meaning to translate my favoured start for any set of larp rules into English from the original German for ages, and here's my best shot: "Roleplay, respond to the roleplay of others, and respect any response to your own."
MVEX: Bring the rain.
MVEX is a tasklarp*. Your character does tasks, tasks have consequences, they deal with them. In MVEX, gigantic monsters are destroying the cities of the world, and the players' task is to stop them. No, you can't stop all of them. Yes, every character has a deeper connection to some cities than most, hence conflict... Continue Reading →
A counter-point between UK and Nordic traditions. WIP.
Even by my low standards this month, this is a lazy, lazy post. It's simply three axes to contrast a "UK lrp" with a "Nordic larp".It's not developed any more than that. It doesn't even define the 6 axis-end points, really. It only kinda recognises that UK and Nordic folk are quite happily running larps... Continue Reading →
Another bit of self-indulgence: Odyssey this time.
It was the last event of the Odyssey system. I'd played King Minos, the MC of the arena since the first event. 7 years, 13 events, 500 or so arena combats witnessed. I'd never taken the floor in anger.
You can never have too many hats, shoes and gloves.
When folk say "My, your costume is ace!" I usually say two things. One "Ah, yes, I cheat - my wife is a costume designer and she tells me what to wear. And a Wardrobe Mistress, so she can point me at where to hire things I can't buy..."One of the things she says is... Continue Reading →
All for spreadsheets: the organised one.
This is so I can always find it. Remember the other day I said "I thought it’d be OK. I’m glad it was. Thanks to Rachel Thomas and her amazing sheaf of spreadsheets which made it be."
Thoughts on playing confrontational characters at LARP: a guest conversation by Kelly Jane Poole and Charlie Holdway.
Kelly Jane Poole and Charlie Holdway had this back and forth on confrontational characters the other day. There were some other folk saying good stuff too, but this I can see as filmed as a head to head somewhere. Or something. Anyway. Here it is. Confrontational characters... This is inspired by a conversation I've seen... Continue Reading →
All for me: the (most) self-indulgent one.
I am really proud of All For One. Six years ago Rich Smith started a Facebook group called "H runs a musketeers game." 30 months ago, Bill Thomas signed up to do prop. build on game. (I'd cruelly deceived him by saying it was the Dogtanian version.) 2 years ago Ian and Rachel Thomas said... Continue Reading →
